Duties
With a mission to drive educational transformation, process innovation, curriculum reform and pedagogy innovation, the Education Research Centre (ERC) [to be renamed as the Educational Research and Technologies Centre (ERTC) on 1 September 2026] of the Institute for Higher Education Research and Development (IHERD) seeks high-caliber professionals to advance future learning and future teaching through the investigation, development and application of AI and digital technologies. Aligned with the new positioning of ERTC with research priorities, i.e. spanning education paradigms, competency development, pedagogy/curriculum/policy/tools and assessment methods, the appointees are expected to contribute to education innovation through evidence-informed practice, strategic development and institutional implementation, with a focus on measurable impact, human-AI interaction, and ethical and responsible technology integration.
The appointees will focus on one or more of the following areas:
(a) Student-Centric Learning - Explore and develop future-oriented, student-centred learning models supported by AI and digital technologies (e.g. adaptive and personalised learning paths, immersive environments, seamless technology integration and diverse learning styles/paces) to better address individual needs and interests, foster intrinsic motivation and self-exploration, and enhance student engagement and learning outcomes;
(b) Student/Staff Competency Matrix - Define essential competencies for the digital and AI era, informed by international benchmarks for students and teachers, and develop structured core competency frameworks/matrices, graduate skills-gap analyses, and tools for tracking, assessing and supporting human-AI interaction, competency-based general education and educators' competency development;
(c) Future Teaching Innovation - Investigate and support the adoption of innovative teaching approaches enabled by AI and digital technologies, including interdisciplinary and modular learning, scenario-based learning, competency-based curriculum design, digital tools and learning platforms, and data-informed practices to enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning experiences;
(d) AI and Digital Education - Investigate curriculum design (including knowledge-graph-based structured curriculum design), teaching approaches, AI-in-education policies, AI-integration levels and AI index design, and outcome measurement relating to AI education and the broader use of digital technologies, with a view to enhancing pedagogical effectiveness, relevance, scalability and responsible AI governance; and
(e) Learning Analytics and Assessment - Examine AI-driven and digitally enabled analytics for pattern identification, performance prediction, feedback loops, and timely interventions, and investigate competency-based assessment and AI-powered assessment with personalised feedback, while addressing data privacy, algorithmic transparency and the ethical and environmental implications of AI use.
The appointees will also be required to:
(f) conduct and lead high-quality research projects aligned with IHERD's strategic priorities in AI, digital education, future learning, future teaching and human-AI interaction;
(g) collaborate with internal units and other leading universities or external partners on the design, development and implementation of innovative education initiatives;
(h) disseminate findings and project outcomes through reports, publications, presentations and stakeholder engagement activities;
(i) conduct environmental scanning and evidence synthesis on emerging trends and practices in AI and digital education and the ethical, data-governance and sustainability implications of AI to inform institutional strategies and initiatives; and
(j) perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of IHERD or his/her delegates.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
(a) a recognised degree, preferably with a PhD degree, in AI, Data Science, Learning Analytics, Learning Technologies, Digital Education, Cognitive Psychology/Cognitive Science or related disciplines;
(b) at least eight years of solid and professional experience, preferably gained in a tertiary education or research setting, and familiarity with international digital/AI competency benchmarks;
(c) solid skills relevant to the specific specialism mentioned above;
(d) strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with proficiency in evaluation, project development and applied inquiry methodologies;
(e) the ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and thrive in innovative environments;
(f) excellent time management skills to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality outputs; and
(g) an excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, with fluency in Putonghua.
Shortlisted candidates may be invited to sit for a written test and deliver a presentation.

Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
