Half-time Teaching Fellow in Technical English

[Appointment period: twelve months]
Duties
The appointee will be required to:
(a) develop and implement a holistic English Enhancement programme which aims at skills in technical communications through course-embedded and out-of-class activities;
(b) assist subject lecturers to revamp teaching and learning activities and assessment items to support the development of specific technical communication skills in English;
(c) provide support to students, including but not limited to developing self-study materials / guidelines, offering face-to-face or online briefing sessions / workshops / consultations;
(d) offer out-of-class workshops to improve basic English competence of weak students and further enhance communication skills of strong students;
(e) assist subject lecturers in evaluating the English speaking and/or writing components in assessment items;
(f) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his delegates.
Qualifications
Applicants should:
(a) have a first degree preferably in a science or engineering discipline and a master’s degree preferably in English Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or English teaching and learning or a related discipline;
(b) have at least three years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience, preferably in science and engineering discipline;
(c) be highly proficient in written and spoken English; and
(d) have solid experience in development of teaching materials.
Preference will be given to native English speakers and/or those who have a deep understanding of the English problems of engineering students in Hong Kong and/or relevant experience in educational research.
