Duties
The Assistant Director (Communications) will lead the Communications team within the Communications and Public Affairs Office and play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the content and storytelling strategy that supports the University’s brand value and enhances its academic and institutional reputation.
The appointee will be required to:
(a) Leadership and Strategies
• develop and implement integrated communications, storytelling and campaign strategies that align with the University’s vision, mission and strategic direction, ensuring consistency in messaging and brand positioning across all platforms;
• provide leadership in driving change and transformation in communications approaches and practices;
• work closely with different teams within the Office to ensure a cohesive, forward-looking and impactful communications strategy;
(b) Content Strategy, Publications and Story Development
• oversee the planning, production and management of University publications, flagship content initiatives and thematic campaigns to showcase the University’s excellence in education, research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, and to support institutional priorities, including anniversary-related communications and content development;
• strategise the development of a central content hub and establish effective systems and processes to enable stories and content to be developed, adapted and repurposed for different platforms, including video, social media, website articles, newsletters, magazines and other publications;
• identify compelling story angles and work closely with professors, researchers and academic leaders to develop high-impact stories and campaign content, translating complex academic, research and technical subject matter into clear, engaging and accessible narratives for a wide range of audiences;
(c) Speech Writing and Executive Communications
• provide expert communications support to the University’s senior management, including the Council Chairman and President, encompassing speech writing, message development, presentation preparation, research on assigned topics, and the development of other high-quality content to support senior executives;
(d) Collaboration and Coordination
• work closely with the Offices of the President and other key units to ensure alignment and support in communication efforts, fostering effective collaboration with internal stakeholders; and
(e) Additional Duties
• perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Office or her delegates or the Central Management of the University from time to time.
The appointee will be required to work outside normal office hours and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays when necessary.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
(a) a recognised degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field with at least fifteen years of relevant experience in a senior communications role, preferably within an academic or institutional setting, and in a capacity to lead a team;
(b) strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and inspire a diversified content team, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal abilities;
(c) exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience in speech writing and strategic content development;
(d) an excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, with fluency in Putonghua being an advantage;
(e) excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong understanding of brand management and strategic communication principles; and
(f) the ability to work collaboratively across teams, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and thrive in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to sit for a written test.
Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
