[Appointment period: each for twelve months]

Duties

The appointees will assist the project leader in the research project - “Aeroengine digital record”.  Most research activities will be carried out in the fabrication facilities, laboratories, and workshops of the Centre. The project will be undertaken in collaboration with the Centre’s industrial partners from the aviation sector and conducted under the University and Boeing research agreement.  They will be required to:

(a)    develop machine learning-based image processing algorithms for surface condition recognition, defect detection, and digital feature extraction of aircraft components;

(b)    participate in the development of an automatic video-screening system for aviation components to support real-time inspection and classification tasks;

(c)    research robot control or UAV path planning algorithms for surface treatment, inspection, or data acquisition processes on aircrafts;

(d)    analyse experimental data, optimise model performance, and collaborate on algorithm deployment and validation with hardware systems; 

(e)    generate engineering documentation in accordance with the Centre’s procedures, including data evaluation reports, algorithm descriptions, and system design documents; and

(f)     perform any other duties as assigned by the project leader or his/her delegate(s).

Qualifications

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Fellow post should have a doctoral degree or an equivalent qualification and must have no more than five years of post-qualification experience at the time of application.

Applicants for the Research Associate post should have a master’s degree or a good honours degree with three years of research / relevant work experience.

Applicants for the Research Assistant post should have an honours degree or an equivalent qualification, with research / relevant work experience being an advantage.  

For all posts, applicants should have:

(a)    familiarity with AI algorithms, with research or project experience in image processing, pattern recognition, or computer vision; 

(b)    a good understanding of the fundamentals of robot control, cobots, or UAV path planning; relevant coursework or project experience is preferred; 

(c)    strong hands-on skills, with some project development or experimental experience, and the ability to participate in algorithm design, validation, and system integration;

(d)    proficiency in Python, C#, C++ or other programming languages; experience in embedded systems or hardware development is a plus;

(e)    interest in aviation non-destructive inspection, surface analysis, coating assessment, or related fields is preferred; and

(f)     a good command of written and spoken English.
