Director of Industrial Centre

The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of the Director of Industrial Centre.  Reporting to the Deputy President and Provost, the appointee will provide leadership and strategic direction to drive the vision, mission and strategic development of the Centre in alignment with the University’s strategic plan. 

The Industrial Centre is a Central Technical Facility with a complete collection of engineering facilities and equipment together with a pool of expertise in different engineering disciplines.  It serves to provide engineering education as well as technical and research support to researchers and students to realise their research, projects and incubation initiatives.  For more information about the Industrial Centre, please visit the website at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/ic/.

Job Functions

The appointee will be required to:

(a)    provide visionary and strategic leadership to the Centre by formulating and driving its vision, mission, strategic directions, ensuring alignment with the University’s strategic plan, innovation initiatives, and evolving technological landscape;

(b)    lead, inspire, and manage a diverse team of professional, technical and administrative staff to deliver excellence in service-teaching and learning, research support and knowledge transfer support activities;

(c)    oversee the operation and continuous enhancement of the Centre’s facilities, technologies and service platforms, including budgeting, resource allocation, quality assurance and performance management;

(d)    strengthen strategic partnerships and collaborations by interfacing with senior management, academic departments, research institutes and administrative units within the University at different levels as well as with industry partners, government bodies and community stakeholders;

(e)    support the development of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship through facilitation of high impact research, project incubation, prototyping and interdisciplinary collaboration; and

(f)     perform any other duties as assigned by the Deputy President and Provost or his delegate(s) or the Central Management of the University from time to time.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    a PhD degree in relevant fields, plus a relevant professional qualification;

(b)    not less than fifteen years of managerial experience, including at least ten years of which at management level or key position in large organisations;

(c)    extensive experience in supporting academic research and development, industrial projects, engineering project management, preferably with exposure to emerging technologies such as AI enabled engineering;

(d)    a strong understanding of the professional development needs of future engineers, technologists, innovators and entrepreneurs, with the ability to shape hands on and research inspired learning experiences;

(e)    a proven track record of leadership in innovation, organisational development and strategic transformation, with a keen awareness of current and emerging engineering technologies and education trends;

(f)     excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders; and

(g)     an excellent command of both spoken and written English, and preferably fluency in Putonghua.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed‑term gratuity‑bearing contract.  Re‑engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
