As one of the largest social sciences departments in the Asian Pacific region, the Department of Applied Social Sciences offers research degrees at MPhil and PhD levels as well as taught programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in various disciplines.
The Department is home to many thriving research and practice units: Centre for Social Policy and Social Entrepreneurship, Child Development Centre, China and Global Development Network, and Professional Practice and Assessment Centre. It is also strongly connected with the Institute of Active Ageing of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and other health-related disciplines. They provide platforms for collaborative research, practice projects, and policy discussions with government departments and NGOs. Focused areas of research in the Department include but not limited to: (a) family, child, youth and ageing studies; (b) psychology, mental health, and health; (c) social work and human service management; (d) social policy, social welfare, and community development; and (e) social theory, and the Chinese mainland and global social development.

Duties
The appointee will be required to:
(a) engage in teaching and learning activities in Social Work and related disciplines;
(b) coordinate and supervise student seminars, tutorials, projects and fieldwork at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
(c) contribute to programme/course planning, administration and development and engage in scholarly activities in teaching enhancement, including teaching and learning development and application of online/blended learning;
(d) coordinate teaching activities within the department and the delivery of teaching service to other departments within the University, and engage in the management and development of teaching programmes;
(e) make contributions to curriculum and pedagogy development and programme management;
(f) engage in departmental academic and administrative duties; and
(g) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates.
Qualifications
Applicants for the post of Senior Teaching Fellow should have a PhD or doctoral degree plus six years or more post-qualification experience in social work practice and three years or more tertiary teaching experience.
Applicants for the post of Teaching Fellow should have a PhD or doctoral degree, plus a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Social Work with not less than five years of post-degree experience in social work practice, preferably specialising in ageing, rehabilitation, macro social work and mental health practice.
Applicants should also:
(a) possess qualifications registrable with the Social Workers Registration Board in Hong Kong;
(b) have a successful academic/professional record in teaching and/or social services employment;
(c) have a high level of subject knowledge, skills and competence, and be open to the use of e-learning and blended learning strategies in teaching and scholarship;
(d) have a strong network in social work or related social sciences fields; and
(e) have a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, with fluency in Putonghua being an advantage.
Applicants for the post of Senior Teaching Fellow should also demonstrate a high level of proficiency in delivering teaching and professional services in the field of Social Work. They should also possess proven leadership in their subject discipline, professional service and programme management. Experience in promoting teaching quality and securing teaching and learning grants will be an advantage.
Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
