Centralised Animal Facilities
Assistant Technical Officer

Duties
The appointee will be required to:
(a) provide technical and operational support to the Centralised Animal Facilities (CAF) and its users in terms of animal handling, animal breeding, daily operation and experimental techniques;
(b) be responsible for breeding programmes of selected species of mice and rats;
(c) liaise with staff and students from internal units and sister institutions on various aspects of animal husbandry and holding services;
(d) provide administrative and secretarial support to the CAF, including but not limited to the provision of customer service and the maintenance of CAF’s operation;
(e) provide training and guidance to the junior staff of the CAF;
(f) perform purchasing duties and liaise with suppliers, contractors and external parties;
(g) stand-in for junior staff to maintain smooth operation of the CAF and uphold its hygienic standards; and
(h) perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of CAF or his/her delegates.
The appointee will be required to work on shift and/or Saturdays/Sundays/public holidays.
Qualifications
Applicants should:
(a) have a recognised degree in Biotechnology, Animal Science or a related discipline, preferably with a relevant master’s degree;
(b) have at least two years’ hands-on experience in handling laboratory animals, with animal breeding experience being an advantage;
(c) have a good knowledge of the use of animals in research and/or animal ethics;
(d) have good computer literacy including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
(e) be able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua being an advantage; and
(f) have good communication and interpersonal skills.
Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
