Assistant Technical Officer

Duties 

The appointee will be required to: 

(a)    assist in the coordination and maintenance of teaching and research laboratories within the Unit, ensuring their smooth operation;

(b)    carry out routine maintenance on teaching and research instruments;

(c)    order chemicals, consumables and apparatus for the teaching and research laboratories; 

(d)    prepare reagents, samples and equipment and perform demonstration for students in practical classes; 

(e)    provide technical assistance to research and project students; 

(f)    check and update the stock and inventory of chemicals and instruments;

(g)    assist in the implementation of Health and Safety policies of the University; and 

(h)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates.

Qualifications 

Applicants should have a recognised degree in Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification, preferably with a master’s degree in the said discipline.  

Preference will be given to those with post qualification experience in at least two disciplines, namely Cellular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology or Medical Microbiology or post qualification experience in Molecular Biology and Cell Culture Techniques.

Conditions of Service 

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.
