School of Optometry

Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Associate / Research Assistant

(Ref. 240502009)

[Appointment period: twelve months initially, with possibility of further appointment]

The School of Optometry is looking for excellent candidates to join our research team to develop smart adaptive eyeglasses combining a wearable optics visual analyser and an adaptive corrective focus. The smart adaptive eyeglass aims to capture the natural accommodative dynamics in real-world environments and provide in-depth adaptive optics adjustment for visual training and correction of accommodative deficiencies in presbyopic and low-vision populations. The candidate will be immersed in a dynamic interdisciplinary research setting, collaborating with experts from the Applied Optics group at the University of Galway, the MIPA laboratory at the University of Nimes, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the School of Optometry at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources for conducting cutting-edge research will be provided to the successful candidate, as well as ample opportunities for scientific publishing, conference presentations, and professional development.

Duties

The appointee will assist the project leader in the research project – “Towards an intelligent eyeglass with autocorrection”.  He/She will be required to:

(a)    develop the optomechanical design of the corrective lens system;

(b)    develop a small eyeglass-integrated wavefront sensor;

(c)    build an adaptive control system for real-time adjustment of the wearer’s focus;

(d)    incorporating extra modalities, such as time of flight distance sensing and eye tracking into the eyeglass; and

(e)    perform any other duties as assigned by the project leader or his delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Fellow post should a doctoral degree in Optics or related science disciplines and must have no more than five years of post-qualification experience at the time of application.

Applicants for the Research Associate post should have a master’s degree in the above-mentioned disciplines or a good honours degree with three or more years of research/relevant work experience.

Applicants for the Research Assistant post should have an honours degree in the above-mentioned disciplines or an equivalent qualification.

Applicants should also:

(a)    be proficient in ray tracing programs, such as Zemax or Code V;

(b)    be proficient in programming languages, such as C/C++, Python or Matlab; and

(c)    have strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to independently troubleshoot experimental challenges.

Overseas graduates and applicants with strong publication records are welcome to apply.
