Research Assistant (two posts)

[Appointment period: each for twelve months]


The appointees will assist the project leader in the research project - “One health approach in food and environmental microbiology”.   He/She will be required to:

(a) isolate and culture microbial organisms from various food and environmental samples; 

(b) perform nucleic acid extraction from different types of samples;

(c) utilise molecular biology techniques, such as RT-qPCR, for the quantification and analysis viral targets;

(d) conduct next-generation sequencing to explore microbial communities and pathogen genomics;

(e) employ MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the identification and characterisation of microbial isolates; 

(f) ensure strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols and proper documentation of all research activities;

(g) execute a combination of bench work and data analysis; and

(h) collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.


Applicants should:

(a) have an honours degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology or an equivalent qualification, preferably from a reputable university or a well-recognised university (i.e. the top 100 universities for STEM subjects of interest in the world university ranking tables); and

(b) have experience and laboratory skills of basic molecular biology techniques including PCR/qPCR.

Preference will be given to those with experience and laboratory skills of microbiology and cell culture.
